A convenience store employee in Tottori Prefecture has been presented with a letter of appreciation by the Kotoura Daisen Police Department for preventing a fictitious bill scam targeting a senior citizen. The employee’s vigilance and routine practice of speaking directly with customers played a crucial role in safeguarding the resident’s funds.
Suspicion Raised by Repeated Electronic Money Purchases
The incident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. on the 2nd of the month, when a male customer in his 70s visited the store asking to purchase 15,000 yen worth of “BitCash” electronic money.
The employee on duty, Mr. Esaki, recalled that the same customer had attempted to buy the same type of electronic money the previous day. Sensing something unusual about the repeated transaction, Mr. Esaki gently initiated a conversation with the customer.
Identifying the Scam and Contacting Police
When asked about the purpose of the purchase, the customer explained that it was required to claim “lottery winnings.” Recognizing this as a classic pattern of fictitious bill fraud, Mr. Esaki warned the customer that it was likely a scam.
Although the customer left the store without being fully convinced, Mr. Esaki immediately alerted the police, leading to quick intervention that successfully prevented any financial loss.
Commendation Ceremony at Kotoura Daisen Police Station
On July 27, a ceremony was held at the Kotoura Daisen Police Station. Chief Shinsuke Nakajima presented Mr. Esaki with a certificate of appreciation, stating, “We are deeply grateful for your cooperation, which successfully prevented a fraudulent crime.”
Upon receiving the award, Mr. Esaki reflected, “I make it a rule to speak with elderly customers whenever they purchase electronic money. I want to continue offering polite and careful communication in the future.”
The Value of Attentive Customer Communication in Fraud Prevention
This case highlights the vital role that attentive customer service in retail stores plays in local crime prevention. Scams involving electronic gift cards often rely on deceiving victims into urgent purchases.
Prompt inquiries by store staff act as an essential line of defense. Continued awareness and friendly communication in local communities remain effective tools in protecting residents from fraud.
